Evidence that services have been effective:

Sylvan Learning Center students comprise a diverse population including those from low-income families and minority groups. Ace It! Tutoring is a new education model developed by Sylvan Learning, Inc., the parent company of Sylvan Learning Center. In the Sylvan Learning Center we assess our impact on student achievement in part by analyzing Grade Equivalent gains, as measured by pre- and post- program performance on a nationally recognized standardized assessment, the California Achievement Test (CAT/5). In 2003, 83% of Sylvan’s more than 28,000 reading students increased at least one grade equivalent on the CAT after thirty-six hours of instruction. In 2003, 88% of Sylvan’s more than 11,400 math students increased at least one grade equivalent on the CAT after thirty-six hours of instruction.

Reports to parents, teachers, and LEA (Content, frequency, method of delivery):

The initial orientation meeting provides the parent an opportunity to set specific goals and timelines for the child’s academic progress. Ongoing parent meetings will allow for follow up and parental input. Additionally, according to processes set forth in No Child Left Behind Act, parents are to be involved in the development of a student’s statement of specific achievement goals. The Sylvan Learning Center and Ace It! Tutoring method is a proven method that addresses this precise requirement for each program, and thus can be used to create achievement goals for families participating in our tutoring programs. Statement of achievement goals can be written in a manner to include a timetable that is both desirable and practical from the perspective of the student’s family, the provider and the LEA.
