Evidence that services have been effective:

Our program has been very successful with raising our students’ academic achievement and helping them improve test scores. Our students consistently show significant improvements on their state achievement test scores compared to students in the same district who did not receive tutoring. In one particular high school, of the 114 students we served in grades 9–11 who had failed their state math exams, 86 passed their statewide math achievement test the following year, and 97 of the 114 (85%) showed at least a 10% improvement over their original scores.

Description of methods and strategies for serving eligible students with disabilities:

We will pair students with disabilities with state-certified teachers, preferably teachers with special education certification. Our professional development includes diversity training to ensure that our tutors are aware of training strategies specific to students with disabilities. Additionally, we make every effort to accommodate students with disabilities and make sure they thrive in our tutoring program. Some of the ways we do this include: seating students with disabilities close to the instructor; grouping students for cooperative learning; establishing routines; giving both oral and written directions; having students repeat directions; asking frequent questions; calling on students by name before asking a question; using specific rather than general praise; and increasing wait time.

Description of methods and strategies for serving eligible students with limited English proficiency:

All students with limited English proficiency (LEP) will have access to bilingual personnel who can communicate with them in their native language. We will try, to the extent possible, to pair students with LEP with a bilingual tutor. Additionally, Group Excellence uses a variety of strategies to help our students with LEP succeed, such as: providing verbal and tangible reinforcements; using specific rather than general praise; increasing wait time; repeating key points; and having students summarize at the end.

11.

Qualifications of the service provider(s)/instructor(s):

Group Excellence hires New York-state certified teachers at each site to oversee our instructional staff. Our tutors are primarily college students who have completed at least two years worth of coursework.

12.

Reports to parents, teachers, and LEA (Content, frequency, method of delivery):

We create monthly student progress reports, which include the student’s academic progress; written tutor observations; and a summary of the student’s progress toward his or her Student Learning Plan goals. We send these monthly reports to parents/families, teachers, and LEA via U.S. mail, email or hand-delivery according to the recipient’s stated preference. In addition to the formal, monthly student progress report, we give frequent student progress reports via in-person communication, telephone calls, email, and conferences to parents/families, teachers, and the LEA.

13.

Will transportation to the service location be provided at no charge if requested? (Note: LEAs are not required to provide or pay for transportation)

We do not provide transportation to the service location. However, we do try to select locations that are convenient for parents/families, such as the student’s school, a nearby community center or, when necessary, the student’s home.

Additional relevant information:

Group Excellence believes that our role as tutors can make a lasting, positive impact on students’ lives. After the regular, “on-the-clock” tutoring is over, our tutors transition into mentors — cheering their students on at sporting events, hosting afterschool clubs to build their students’ confidence, and taking older students to college-level events to help foster a love of higher education.
