Approval of Professional Development activities/providers
The New York State Education Department does not approve Professional Development (PD) providers or programs.
The NYSED requires only that LEAs (districts) develop a PD plan that is aligned with identification of their local PD needs; the LEA then decides what PD it will support based on those needs. As a result, all of the following decisions about PD provision and credit rest with each local public school district and/or schools within that district:
- what PD will be required by the district and/or schools;
- whether or not the district will purchase specific PD offerings;
- what PD will be credited towards teachers meeting their individual 175-hour PD requirements; and
- what PD will be credited towards local/contractual salary increments.
Institutions of higher education have their own authority to grant CEU credits through their institution.
Professional development providers should work with local school districts to ensure that their professional development offerings meet the identified teaching and learning needs of the district, and that such offerings are aligned with the NYS Professional Development Standards.

External PD providers who are interested in receiving external recognition or validation of the programs they offer may wish to investigate Sharing Success, which “...is funded by the New York State Legislature and the Governor's Office to identify and disseminate successful educational programs and practices statewide.”
