Who will take NAEP?

Three hundred and ninety-six schools in New York State have been selected by the United States Department of Education (U.S.D.O.E.) to participate in NAEP during the 2012-13 school year. The Office of State Assessment notified schools located outside of New York City during the early fall of 2012 informing them what grades and subjects will be assessed. Schools selected for NAEP within the New York City school district are contacted by the New York City Department of Education. A sample of students from each selected school will be chosen by the U.S.D.O.E. to participate in the designated NAEP assessment.

What subjects will NAEP assess?

In 2013, NAEP assessments are scheduled for mathematics and reading at Grades 4, 8, and 12. In addition, a technology and engineering literacy (TEL) pilot will be administered to a select group of Grade 8 students and will be conducted on laptop computers provided by NAEP representatives. The TEL pilot will measure students’ capacity to use, understand, and evaluate technology, as well as to understand technological principles and strategies.

Results for the NAEP Assessments in mathematics and reading will be available in late 2013. The results from the TEL pilot will be used as preparation for the first national TEL assessment of Grade 8 students in 2014.

When will NAEP be administered?

NAEP will be administered in selected schools, country-wide, between January 28 and March 8, 2013.

Measuring Student Progress for over 40 Years

NAEP began in 1964 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation to set up the Exploratory Committee for the Assessment of Progress in Education. The first national assessments were conducted in 1969. Voluntary assessments for states began in 1990 on a trial basis, and in 2002 and 2003 selected urban districts participated in the assessment on a trial basis. In 2003, the first NCLB-mandated NAEP assessments in reading and mathematics were administered.
