Who will take NAEP?

Sixty-four schools in New York State have been selected by the United States Department of Education (U.S.D.O.E.) to participate in NAEP during the 2013-14 school year. The Office of State Assessment notified schools located outside of New York City during the early fall of 2013 informing them what grades and subjects will be assessed. Schools selected for NAEP within the New York City school district are contacted by the New York City Department of Education. A sample of students from each selected school will be chosen by the U.S.D.O.E. to participate in the designated NAEP assessment.

What subjects will NAEP assess?

In 2014, NAEP assessments are scheduled for civics, geography, and U.S. history at Grade 8. In addition, a technology and engineering literacy (TEL) assessment will be administered to a select group of Grade 8 students and will be conducted on laptop computers provided by NAEP representatives. The TEL pilot will measure students’ capacity to use, understand, and evaluate technology, as well as to understand technological principles and strategies. The results from these assessments will be released as The Nation’s Report Card.

NAEP will also administer science pilots at Grades 4 and 12. Results from the pilots will be used to prepare for future assessments.

When will NAEP be administered?

NAEP will be administered in selected schools, country-wide, between January 27 and March 7, 2014.

Measuring Student Progress for over 40 Years

NAEP began in 1964 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation to set up the Exploratory Committee for the Assessment of Progress in Education. The first national assessments were conducted in 1969. Voluntary assessments for states began in 1990 on a trial basis, and in 2002 and 2003 selected urban districts participated in the assessment on a trial basis. In 2003, the first NCLB-mandated NAEP assessments in reading and mathematics were administered.
