Music
The Music Education Data chart contains statewide totals for public school student enrollments and teacher assignments in selected music courses.  The data is from the Basic Education Data System (BEDS) annually reported by teachers and administrators across New York State.  Music Education personnel in the State Education Department have received the yearly reports and compiled this chart to show trends in music enrollments and teaching assignments across the years.  The current chart (pdf document 20 KB) covers a time period of over thirty years from the 1975-76 school year until the 2010-11 school year.
Please note in the fall of 2001 some BEDS assignment codes were updated or eliminated based on the recommendations of a group of music educators from the New York State School Music Association. For example, courses with Junior High titles were changed to Middle/Jr. High School to be more reflective of Department priorities and educational trends.  Elimination of some course titles, such as Individual Instruction, resulted in clearer reporting by music teachers and a fuller utilization of the Instrumental Lesson Group or Vocal Lesson Group categories.
