Common Core State Standards K-12 Work and Feedback Groups Announced
The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) have announced the individuals who will develop the K-12 standards for English language arts and mathematics in the Common Core State Standards Initiative. Fifty-one states and territories have joined this state-led process. US Department of Defense to Award SMART Scholarships
The USDOD's Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship program's overarching goal is promoting the education, recruitment, and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in STEM disciplines. 300 scholarships are expected to be awarded this year worth a total of $45 million. Environmental Education Poster Contest
A great project for middle and high school sciences classes – “The Importance of Wastewater Treatment Poster Contest.” This contest is an excellent tool for teaching students about water quality issues and the importance of environmental protection. The contest is sponsored by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the NY Water Environment Association. All students who participate will receive a certificate of appreciation. The two overall winners will receive $50 and engraved plaques. Runners-up receive $25 and plaques. The two winning teachers will get a water test kit for use in the classroom and also plaques. The filing deadline is January 8, 2010.  Please, visit www.dec.ny.gov/education/1896.html or www.nywea.org for the application form, rules, and previous winners.

NOVELNY Use Continues to Climb in 2009
New Yorkers searched the New York Online Virtual Electronic Library over 35.5 million times since July 2008. This represents a 20 percent increase in the number of searches over the prior year. NOVELNY is a "virtual library" that connects New Yorkers in every community to state-of-the-art online information without regard to economic, geographic or physical barriers. This convenient online library includes a wide variety of full-text resources - books, magazines, newspapers, research, and reference resources and is available to New York State residents with no fees.New Yorkers can access NOVELNY 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by logging on with a public library card or with a New York driver license or non-driver ID. Free NYSERDA Energy Smart Students Workshops
The New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) is now offering Energy Smart Students workshops across the State. Attendees will receive FREE curriculum correlated to the New York State Learning Standards in Math, Science, Technology Education, Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Family and Consumer Science. State Archives Sponsors 20th Annual Student Research Contest
To promote and recognize excellence in student research, the New York State Archives, a program of the State Education Department in the Office of Cultural Education, is sponsoring the 20th annual Student Research Awards. The program is open to all New York students in grades 4-12 who use historical records in their research projects. The entry deadline is July 1, 2010. College of DuPage Library Professional Development Teleconferences
The New York State Library’s Division of Library Development is pleased to announce that a statewide license with the College of DuPage to provide five new professional development teleconferences has been negotiated for the fifth straight year.  The New York State Library has arranged this license on behalf of New York's 7,000 libraries and library systems. There is no cost to local libraries and systems. Viewers can see these live teleconferences on desktop computers via video streaming as a webcast or via satellite downlink. NYS 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fine Arts & Essay Display
New York State schools are invited annually to submit student artwork and essays based on Dr. King's Six Principles of Nonviolence. This initiative encourages student participation in educational activities in celebration of his birthday throughout the year. The categories are writing, painting, drawing, sculpting and photography. All entries must be postmarked by December 7, 2009 and will be placed on display for viewing one week prior to the King Holiday January 18, 2010 on the Concourse of the Empire State Plaza in Albany, New York. Governor's Summit Credit Recovery Work Group. Credit Recovery Survey
In October 2008, Governor David Paterson held a Summit on School Engagement and Dropout Prevention to increase public awareness of student engagement, dropout prevention, and college-readiness, secure commitment for integrated collaboration between corporate, nonprofit, public and education sectors, and provide a forum to discuss and recommend policy changes. As one of 14 work groups formed with membership from statewide organizations, the Credit Recovery work group was developed to collect information regarding the current state of credit recovery initiatives in NYS, as part of a broad examination of school engagement and dropout prevention. To accomplish the goals, we have developed a survey asking your thoughts on the credit recovery program and how your district or BOCES has utilized it to help your at-risk students.

2009 Louis E. Yavner Awards Information
The Board of Regents invites nominations for the 2009 Louis E. Yavner Teaching and Citizen Awards. These awards provide recognition of a teacher and citizen who have made outstanding contributions to New York State Education about the Holocaust and other violations of human rights. The awards were established by the Regents and funded by the late Regent Emeritus Louis E. Yavner. NCLB Title IIB Mathematics and Science Partnerships Grant 2010-2013
The New York State Education Department administers this competitive grant program intended to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM) departments in institutions of higher education are at the core of these improvement efforts. Applications must be postmarked by January 22, 2010. Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program $50,000 to $1,000,000 Awards
The Institute of Museum and Library Services has announced  a funding opportunity.  $50,000–$1,000,000 grant award to graduate schools of library and information science, either individually or in a partnership.  These awards are to support projects to develop faculty and library leaders, to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians, to conduct research on the library profession, and to support early career research on any area of library and information science by tenure-track, untenured faculty in graduate schools of library and information science.  They will also support projects to attract high school and college students to consider careers in libraries, to build institutional capacity in graduate schools of library and information science, and to assist in the professional development of librarians and library staff.  Applications are due December 15, 2009.  For further information, please go to http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/21centuryLibrarian.shtm

America's Media Makers Development and Production Grants
The National Endowment for the Humanities offers two categories of grants for media projects: Development Grants and Production Grants. Grants for America’s Media Makers support projects in the humanities that explore stories, ideas, and beliefs that deepen our understanding of our lives and our world. Grants for America’s Media Makers should encourage dialogue, discussion, and civic engagement, and they should foster learning among people of all ages. Development grants enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to develop humanities content and format and to prepare programs for production. Applications may be submitted for any phase of a project. Applicants are not required to obtain a development grant before applying for a production grant. Eligible Applicants include private, public, and State controlled institutions of higher education. Current Closing Date for Applications is Jan. 13, 2010. Blakemore Grants for East and Southeast Asian Language Study
Blakemore language grants are awarded for study of the principal modern languages of East and Southeast Asia: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer, and Burmese. Consideration will be given to other East or Southeast Asian languages on an individual basis. Grants will not be made for the study of Asian languages not in current use. The next deadline for applications is December 30, 2009. Grants will be awarded for study starting between June 2010 and May 2011. Toyota TAPESTRY 20th Annual Science Grant Competition
The Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers program, sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and administered by NSTA, is now accepting entries for the 2009–2010 competition. Now in its 20th year, the program offers grants up to $10,000 to K–12 science teachers for innovative projects that enhance science education in their school and/or school district over a one-year period. IMLS National Leadership Grant program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting grant applications for the agency's 2010 National Leadership Grant (NLG) program. Applications, guidelines, and examples of successful proposals can be found on the agency's Web site at http://www.imls.gov/news/2009/102809b.shtm . The deadline for submitting applications is February 1, 2010. For the past 12 years, the National Leadership Grants program has been the capstone program for IMLS, providing the agency's highest level of support for innovative projects that provide important research, tools,and models for library and museum programs across the country. Grant Amounts range from:$50,000 to $1,000,000, with up to $100,000 for planning grants.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth
The US Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer, semester, and academic year international immersion programs.  Merit-based scholarships are available to study overseas for summer, semester and academic year programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Russian and Turkish. In addition, your school, school system and/or local university can apply for a sub-grantee award to organize and implement six- to eight-week overseas intensive language programs to take place in summer 2010. Interested students should visit http://www.nsliforyouth.org , where they can complete the online application. The deadline is December 4, 2009. Organizations interested in Summer 2010 sub-grant opportunities can view the Request for Proposal (RFP) at http://www.americancouncils.org/news/8b/National_Security_Language_Institute_for_Youth_2010_Subgrantee_Competition . The submission deadline for proposals is November 16, 2009.

The Big Read Program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and in cooperation with Arts Midwest, announces February 2, 2010 as the 2010 deadline for The Big Read, a program to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. Organizations may apply for grants ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 with the grant size determined by community population, number of activities planned, and artistic excellence and merit. Selected communities will participate in The Big Read from September 2010 - June 2011. NEA Foundation-Student Achievement Grants
The NEA Foundation provides funds to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area. The proposed work should engage students in critical-thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The grant amount is $5,000.  Funds may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, software, or scholars-in-residence. NanoTeach
NanoTeach is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded professional development project that utilizes the Designing Effective Science Instruction (DESI) framework to integrate nanoscience and technology content into existing science curricula. It is a collaboration between Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility (SNF), the Georgia Institute of Technology, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN), and ASPEN Associates. Organizers are seeking 30 public high school science teachers to participate in the year-long, nationwide pilot test of NanoTeach beginning summer 2010. Teachers who complete all requirements will receive a stipend of $3,000 (15 days at $200/day) for the out-of-classroom time required for participation. The application deadline is January 8, 2010. Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program
The U.S. State Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is offering an exciting opportunity for educators. The Distinguished Awards program offers fellowships to highly accomplished U.S. and international teachers to receive a grant to study at a university, conduct research, teach classes and workshops, and develop a capstone project pertaining to their field of educational inquiry during a semester overseas. This year's participating countries include: Argentina, Finland, India, Israel, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States. Deadline for applying to the Distinguished Awards program is January 15, 2010. *Additional countries may be added prior to the January 15th deadline. James Madison Fellowships
The James Madison Fellowships were created to honor the legacy of James Madison, President, Secretary of State, Father of the Constitution by providing fellowship for graduate studies that focus on the Constitution. The Foundation offers secondary level teachers of government and history up to $24,000 to undertake graduate studies on topics related to the United States Constitution. The Fellows receive the opportunity to deepen critical research and writing skills, develop professional ties that can significantly affect their career paths, and strengthen their teaching proficiency. Each year, this federal program attempts to award at least one James Madison Fellowship in each state. Teaching and Learning to Near-Native Levels of Language Proficiency
The Coalition of Distinguished Language Centers conducts annual (and, in some years, semi-annual) conferences about teaching to and reaching Level 4 (near-native) proficiency. The conferences include theory and research, as well as updates on high-level-language program activities, along with a healthy dose of shared practical experience. Web Portal of the Russian Federation
The web portal of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation is specially designed for all admirers of the Russian language and Russian culture. The project is targeted at the following audiences:

  • Schoolchildren, who are learning Russian and want to continue their education in the framework of Russian Distance education or to deepen their knowledge of the Russian language, receive Russian General Certificate of Secondary Education, prepare to enter a Russian higher education institution, study in the framework of Russian system of Additional education.
  • Students, who have chosen a certain education institution in Russia in the framework of pre-higher education system. Young specialists, who have a bachelor’s degree and want to continue their education in Russia. Future post-graduate students of Russian higher educational institutions and research centers.
  • Teachers of Russian and other subjects, who want to do a refresher course, obtain information about Web sites containing useful data, teacher training aids, refresher courses in the country of residence or in Russia (on-site or off-site); training periods, Master’s degree program, post-graduate studies, doctorate.

Ethiopia for Teachers!
From July 1-31, 2010, Kansas State University & Ethiopia Reads are offering a four-week study tour to Ethiopia for grades 4-8 teachers and grades 4-8 administrators who supervise modern languages or areas studies. During April and May 2010, four pre-Departure workshop will be conducted online. Teachers will work in teams to develop classroom materials on history, culture, languages, religion, and current challenges in Ethiopia.  Participants must deliver lessons in classrooms during the 2010-2011 academic year. Language-learning Websites
The Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO), Lernu.net, and the Esperantic Studies Foundation present this award to a website offering exceptional language-learning resources. The winning website is recognized at CALICO's annual conference banquet, and its developers are presented with an Award Certificate and a prize. Membership in the Lincoln Center Institute/Dana Foundation Fellows Program provides a rich online professional development experience for arts specialists currently working in a pre-K-12 school. U.S. Secretary of Education Affirms Value of Arts Education
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan released an August 2009 letter to school officials and community leaders across the nation reminding them of the important role of arts education in a student's life. This letter offers strong encouragement to education decision makers to find time and funds in the school day to offer a comprehensive, sequential and standards-based arts education. NAEP 2008 Arts Results Released
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in the Arts was administered to a nationally representative sample of 8th grade students in the United States for the first time in more than a decade. It measured student knowledge and skills in music and visual arts with moderate levels of achievement reported.  The report suggested students have about the same access to music and art as in 1997. The NAEP Arts Assessment results reveal a significant achievement gap in student performance in music and the visual arts according to economic status, racial and ethnic identification, gender, and school type and location. Announcing the 20th Annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition
The New York State Art Teacher Association (NYSATA) Legislative Exhibit is co-sponsored by the New York State Alliance for the Arts in Education (NYSSAE). This student art exhibit is held in the Legislative Well in the Capitol Building in Albany each spring. Legislators from across the state are invited to share the artistic accomplishments of their aspiring artist constituents at a reception for students, parents and teachers. A committee of dedicated art educators makes all of the arrangements and notifies legislators of participants in their electoral districts. Each student receives a certificate from NYSATA and many receive letters and/or photographs from their elected representatives. 2010 Olympics of the Visual Arts(OVA)
OVA provides an opportunity for students to participate in individual or group artistic problem solving. A new series of challenges is posed every fall. Students create long-range solutions at their schools, and travel to the Albany area to compete in a day-long celebration of creativity. There are awards for each of the "problem categories" at every level. Artistic problem solving is a great way to get students learning, experiencing and creating! The Olympics of the Visual Arts will be held at the Saratoga Springs Civic Center, Saratoga Springs, New York on Thursday, April 15, 2010. Registration forms must be postmarked by February 15, 2010. Updated Arts Education Data for Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts
The NYSED Arts Education Data in Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts has been updated with information from the 2008-09 school year. The Arts Education Data charts contain statewide totals for public school student enrollments and teacher assignments in selected arts courses. The data is from the Basic Education Data System (BEDS) annually reported by teachers and administrators across New York State. Arts Education personnel in the State Education Department have received the yearly reports and compiled these charts to show trends in enrollments and teaching assignments across the years. NYS 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fine Arts & Essay Display
New York State schools are invited annually to submit student artwork and essays based on Dr. King's Six Principles of Nonviolence. This initiative encourages student participation in educational activities in celebration of his birthday throughout the year. The categories are writing, painting, drawing, sculpting and photography. All entries must be postmarked by December 7, 2009 and will be placed on display for viewing one week prior to the King Holiday January 18, 2010 on the Concourse of the Empire State Plaza in Albany, New York. NEA Foundation-Student Achievement Grants
The NEA Foundation provides funds to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area. Common Core State Standards K-12 Work and Feedback Groups Announced
The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) have announced the individuals who will develop the K-12 standards for English language arts and mathematics in the Common Core State Standards Initiative. American Society of Human Genetics-DNA Day Essay Contest
The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) invites you to participate in the 5th Annual DNA Day Essay Contest! It is only open to 9th – 12th grade students this year. The contest aims to challenge students to examine, question, and reflect on the important concepts of genetics. Essays are expected to contain substantive, well-reasoned arguments indicative of a depth of understanding of the concepts related to the essay questions. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an original essay on the political courage of a U.S. Elected official. Essays are held to high standards, and are judged on both content and presentation. Changes to the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English
The State Education Department's Office of State Assessment has issued a memo regarding changes to the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English. The first administration of the new three-hour, one-day Regents Comprehensive Examination in English will take place in January 2011. This examination will replace the current two-session examination that will continue to be administered during each Regents examination period prior to January 2011. NYSRA Charlotte Award
The New York State Reading Association's (NYSRA) Charlotte Award is a biannual children’s choice book award. In 2008, over 11,000 votes were cast by students in NYS schools for their favorite books from ballots in the primary, intermediate, and young adult categories. PBS Raising Readers Research Results
Results of research evaluating Word World and SUPER WHY! have been released. Children who watch these programs make gains in early literacy skills compared to children who have not watched, and the gains are largest among children whose parents have had no more than a high school education. These two television programs, and their accompanying online resources, were funded by the US Department of Education through the Ready To Learn grant program. They join established programs like Sesame Street and Between the Lions in the PBS Kids Raising Readers literacy campaign. Also part of PBS Kids Raising Readers is the online PBS Kids Island – in which preschoolers can play reading games with favorite PBS KIDS characters, earn tickets, and win prizes. Blakemore Grants for East and Southeast Asian Language Study
Blakemore language grants are awarded for study of the principal modern languages of East and Southeast Asia: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer, and Burmese. Consideration will be given to other East or Southeast Asian languages on an individual basis. Grants will not be made for the study of Asian languages not in current use. National Security Language Initiative for Youth
The US Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer, semester, and academic year international immersion programs.  Merit-based scholarships are available to study overseas for summer, semester and academic year programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Russian and Turkish. In addition, your school, school system and/or local university can apply for a sub-grantee award to organize and implement six- to eight-week overseas intensive language programs to take place in summer 2010. Workshop in Italy for AP Latin Teachers: Vergil, Aeneas and Augustus July 17 – 28, 2010.
This program is designed to help high school teachers in teaching the AP Vergil syllabus. Much of the program will take place on the sites either where Vergil lived and wrote or where the Aeneid was set. The workshop will be organized with mornings spent on study sessions and reading the Aeneid in Latin, a lunch break, and then afternoon site and museum visits, with some on-site readings. Graduate Credits and Continuing Education Units are available through Miami University. Ohio residents qualify for a 50% discount on graduate tuition. NCLB Title IIB Mathematics and Science Partnerships Grant 2010-2013
The New York State Education Department administers this competitive grant program intended to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM) departments in institutions of higher education are at the core of these improvement efforts. US Department of Defense to Award SMART Scholarships
The USDOD's Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship program's overarching goal is promoting the education, recruitment, and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in STEM disciplines. 300 scholarships are expected to be awarded this year worth a total of $45 million. A New Mathematics Resource from the Center on Instruction
The Center on Instruction announced a new resource entitled Identifying Professional Development Needs in Mathematics: A Planning Tool for Grades 3-7 .  This resource identifies professional development needs specific to mathematics. It includes a series of guiding questions that help districts evaluate their existing programs and identify professional development activities that meet their needs. NCTM Releases New Mathematics Publication
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), has released a new publication, "Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making." The document suggests practical changes to the high school mathematics curriculum to refocus learning on reasoning and sense making. This shift is not a minor refinement but constitutes a substantial rethinking of the high school math curriculum. NCTM's new publication urges grounding all students in mathematics that connects them with real-world situations. According to NCTM, the more each mathematics lesson builds on the previous lesson and each year's math experience builds on the previous year's, the more students will be able to learn and retain as they progress from prekindergarten through college. Focusing on reasoning and sense making has the potential to streamline the curriculum and make it more powerful and effective. "Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making" is a conceptual framework to guide the development of future publications and tools related to 9-12 mathematics curriculum and instruction. The document highlights reasoning opportunities in five specific content areas of the high school mathematics curriculum: Reasoning with Numbers and Measurements, Reasoning with Algebraic Symbols, Reasoning with Functions, Reasoning with Geometry, and Reasoning with Statistics and Probability. Curriculum Guidance for Grades 3-8 Mathematics
At their June meeting, the Board of Regents made a policy decision to implement a new administration schedule for the Grades 3-8 English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests to start in this upcoming school year. As a consequence, the 2009-10 Elementary- and Intermediate-level testing schedule has undergone several changes. Please use this guidance to ensure that your local curriculum sequencing is aligned with the May administration of the Grades 3-8 Mathematics Tests. Algebra 2 and Trigonometry Test Sampler Now Available
The new Algebra 2 and Trigonometry Test Sampler and Scoring Guide are now available for the Regents Examination in Algebra 2 and Trigonometry. The first administration of this examination is in June 2010. This Test Sampler consists of examples of the types of questions, the formatting, and the scoring guides that are being developed for the examination. Update! Cohort 2006 Section of Regents Diploma Requirements for Math
The section for the cohort of 2006 within the Regents Diploma Requirements for Mathematics chart has been updated. This cohort has been combined with 2007 to reflect the current implementation of the Mathematics Core Curriculum (Revised 2005) and the administration of the Regents Examinations in Mathematics. In order to fulfill the mathematics portion of a Regents Diploma, students must earn three units of commencement-level mathematics credit and pass one Regents examination in mathematics. Measure for Measure: A Critical Consumer's Guide to Reading Comprehension Assessments for Adolescents This guide draws together evidence on nine of the most commonly used, commercially available reading comprehension assessments for use with adolescents. It provides a critical view into the strengths and weaknesses of each. Authors Lelia Morsy, Michael Kieffer, and Catherine Snow focus on the utility of assessments for the purposes of screening groups of students to identify those who struggle and diagnosing their specific needs. NYSED Physical Education Profile: Commencement Level Assessment Tool
Four hundred and twenty six school districts have received copies of the State Developed Physical Education Profile - CDROM through participation in regional professional development. If your school district is one of the 273 districts who has not received the professional development, please contact your local BOCES Staff and Curriculum Development Network office to schedule a session for your school district. NYSED Approved On-line Coaching Courses
NYSED has approved seven agencies to teach all or some of the required coaching courses on-line. Some may be a blended course that require on-line work and face-to-face classes. Non-Teacher Coaching Licenses
Temporary and Professional Coaching Licenses must now be applied for online through the TEACH system ( http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach/home.html ). Applicants must establish an account on TEACH first (if they do not already have one) and then apply for the appropriate license online. A link is included on the TEACH page for online fingerprinting clearance. The local BOCES will still need to verify all First Aid and CPR certificates and coaching course completion certificates, SAVE, and child abuse workshops.

NYSED Guidelines - Coaching Requirements
The  NYSED guidelines for coaching have been revised to reflect Section 135.4 and 135.5 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education effective July 16, 2009.  This revised guideline has all information and forms needed to ensure coaches meet certification requirements including First Aid and CPR certifications. Revised Regulations Regarding Physical Education
At its meeting on June 23, 2009, the Board of Regents revised Section 135.4 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education regarding physical education. NYSRA Charlotte Award
The New York State Reading Association's (NYSRA) Charlotte Award is a biannual children’s choice book award. In 2008, over 11,000 votes were cast by students in NYS schools for their favorite books from ballots in the primary, intermediate, and young adult categories. Amistad Student Survey
The Amistad Commission is seeking student input regarding the ways that they learned about African American History in their elementary, middle, and high school education. Specifically, we are hoping to learn about how topics such as, the African slave trade, slavery, the post Civil War African American experience, the civil rights movement and the contributions of African Americas are taught in United States history classes across New York State. We invite your students to complete this brief survey, which contains only 13 questions. Partnership for 21st-Century Skills MILE Guide Release
The Partnership for 21st-Century Skills released on November 6, 2009, at the American Association of School Librarians conference, the Milestones for Improving Learning and Education (MILE) Guide, a hands-on tool designed to help districts and schools evaluate their integration of 21st-century skills into current and future practice. The guide includes a self-assessment tool that provides three benchmarks-early stage, transitional stage, and 21st century-for how far along schools and districts are in terms of student knowledge and skills. Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program $50,000 to $1,000,000 Awards
The Institute of Museum and Library Services has announced  a funding opportunity.  $50,000–$1,000,000 grant award to graduate schools of library and information science, either individually or in a partnership.  These awards are to support projects to develop faculty and library leaders, to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians, to conduct research on the library profession, and to support early career research on any area of library and information science by tenure-track, untenured faculty in graduate schools of library and information science.  They will also support projects to attract high school and college students to consider careers in libraries, to build institutional capacity in graduate schools of library and information science, and to assist in the professional development of librarians and library staff.  Applications are due December 15, 2009.  For further information, please go to http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/21centuryLibrarian.shtm

Regents Advisory Council Proposes New Commission On NY Libraries
Citing the dire fiscal struggle of New York’s libraries in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and evidence that library usage by the people of New York has increased dramatically, the members of the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries have urged the Board of Regents to make state and federal funding for libraries a Regents priority budget and legislative item each and every year. The Council’s 2009 annual report to the Regents, which includes this recommendation and others related to strengthening New York’s libraries is now posted on the Council’s webpage at: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/adviscns/rac/2009rept.htm  . The 2009 report also highlights the need for all schools in New York State, including elementary schools, to have school libraries and certified professional librarians. NOVELNY Use Continues to Climb in 2009
New Yorkers searched the New York Online Virtual Electronic Library over 35.5 million times since July 2008. This represents a 20 percent increase in the number of searches over the prior year. NOVELNY is a "virtual library" that connects New Yorkers in every community to state-of-the-art online information without regard to economic, geographic or physical barriers. This convenient online library includes a wide variety of full-text resources - books, magazines, newspapers, research, and reference resources and is available to New York State residents with no fees.New Yorkers can access NOVELNY 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by logging on with a public library card or with a New York driver license or non-driver ID. IMLS National Leadership Grant program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting grant applications for the agency's 2010 National Leadership Grant (NLG) program. Applications, guidelines, and examples of successful proposals can be found on the agency's Web site at http://www.imls.gov/news/2009/102809b.shtm . The deadline for submitting applications is February 1, 2010. For the past 12 years, the National Leadership Grants program has been the capstone program for IMLS, providing the agency's highest level of support for innovative projects that provide important research, tools,and models for library and museum programs across the country. Grant Amounts range from:$50,000 to $1,000,000, with up to $100,000 for planning grants.

College of DuPage Library Professional Development Teleconferences
The New York State Library’s Division of Library Development is pleased to announce that a statewide license with the College of DuPage to provide five new professional development teleconferences has been negotiated for the fifth straight year.  The New York State Library has arranged this license on behalf of New York's 7,000 libraries and library systems. There is no cost to local libraries and systems. Viewers can see these live teleconferences on desktop computers via video streaming as a webcast or via satellite downlink. NYS Library New Calendar for Professional Development
The State Library’s Library Development staff has developed a new on-line "New York Library Careers Information Calendar". It will include the widest range of training from "free" Webinars to multi-session training programs and continuing education offerings of our state’s library schools, statewide library associations and public library, school library and 3Rs systems. The Big Read Program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and in cooperation with Arts Midwest, announces February 2, 2010 as the 2010 deadline for The Big Read, a program to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. Organizations may apply for grants ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 with the grant size determined by community population, number of activities planned, and artistic excellence and merit. Selected communities will participate in The Big Read from September 2010 - June 2011. NCLB Title IIB Mathematics and Science Partnerships Grant 2010-2013
The New York State Education Department administers this competitive grant program intended to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM) departments in institutions of higher education are at the core of these improvement efforts. Applications must be postmarked by January 22, 2010. US Department of Defense to Award SMART Scholarships
The USDOD's Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship program's overarching goal is promoting the education, recruitment, and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in STEM disciplines. 300 scholarships are expected to be awarded this year worth a total of $45 million. Environmental Education Poster Contest
A great project for middle and high school sciences classes – “The Importance of Wastewater Treatment Poster Contest.” This contest is an excellent tool for teaching students about water quality issues and the importance of environmental protection. The contest is sponsored by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the NY Water Environment Association. All students who participate will receive a certificate of appreciation. The two overall winners will receive $50 and engraved plaques. Runners-up receive $25 and plaques. The two winning teachers will get a water test kit for use in the classroom and also plaques. The filing deadline is January 8, 2010.  Please, visit www.dec.ny.gov/education/1896.html or www.nywea.org for the application form, rules, and previous winners.

NanoTeach
NanoTeach is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded professional development project that utilizes the Designing Effective Science Instruction (DESI) framework to integrate nanoscience and technology content into existing science curricula. It is a collaboration between Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility (SNF), the Georgia Institute of Technology, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN), and ASPEN Associates. Organizers are seeking 30 public high school science teachers to participate in the year-long, nationwide pilot test of NanoTeach beginning summer 2010. Teachers who complete all requirements will receive a stipend of $3,000 (15 days at $200/day) for the out-of-classroom time required for participation. The application deadline is January 8, 2010. American Society of Human Genetics-DNA Day Essay Contest
The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) invites you to participate in the 5th Annual DNA Day Essay Contest! It is only open to 9th – 12th grade students this year. The contest aims to challenge students to examine, question, and reflect on the important concepts of genetics. Essays are expected to contain substantive, well-reasoned arguments indicative of a depth of understanding of the concepts related to the essay questions. Why Science Matters? Building a Presence (BaP)/Science Matters is an electronic network initiative from NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) and sponsored in NYS by STANYS (Science Teachers Association of New York State) in partnership with NYSED. Education Law- Sect. 809 Instruction in the Humane Treatment of Animals
School districts are reminded to review Education Law Section 809 - Instruction in the Humane Treatment of Animals on an annual basis. This publication replaces all previous editions and should be put into use in all schools at the start of the 2009-10 school year. International Youth Day Serves as Kick-Off Site for Siemens Foundation
National Science Teacher's Association (NSTA), the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Education are partnering again this year to educate, empower and engage students and teachers nationwide to become “Agents of Change” in improving their communities through the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge. The second year of this national sustainability challenge—now expanded to include elementary school students—encourages students in kindergarten through eighth grade to team up with their classmates to create replicable solutions to environmental issues in their classroom (grades K–2), school (grades 3–5) and community (grades 6–8). Ethiopia for Teachers!
From July 1-31, 2010, Kansas State University & Ethiopia Reads are offering a four-week study tour to Ethiopia for grades 4-8 teachers and grades 4-8 administrators who supervise modern languages or areas studies. During April and May 2010, four pre-Departure workshop will be conducted online. Teachers will work in teams to develop classroom materials on history, culture, languages, religion, and current challenges in Ethiopia.  Participants must deliver lessons in classrooms during the 2010-2011 academic year. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an original essay on the political courage of a U.S. Elected official. To write an excellent essay, students must present a compelling argument, provide specific examples based on authentic research, and critically analyze the evidence. Essays are held to high standards, and are judged on both content and presentation. The New York State STEM Collaborative Launches Its Web Site
The New York State STEM Collaborative is a professional association endeavoring to promote a unified approach for STEM education in New York. The STEM Collaborative membership consists of a number of professional education associations consisting of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), the New York State Technology Education Association (NYSTEA), the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE), the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE), and the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). NYSED Technology Education Publications are Now Available Online
Over 40 NYSED technology education curricular support documents are now available on line as downloadable pdf files. These publications are located via the technology education Web page http://www.p12.nysed.gov/cte/technology/ under the publications link.  Included in these publications is the middle level curricular support document titled, Introduction To Technology Grades 7 & 8, commonly referred to as the "Blue Book". Although technology related publications become outdated rather quickly, these documents can still be of value as reference materials to be used at the local discretion of a school district.

Changes to the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English
The State Education Department's Office of State Assessment has issued a memo regarding changes to the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English. The first administration of the new three-hour, one-day Regents Comprehensive Examination in English will take place in January 2011. This examination will replace the current two-session examination that will continue to be administered during each Regents examination period prior to January 2011. The NYSED VLS, www.nysvls.org  has been enhanced and recently expanded with additional content. Additions include: lesson plans for teachers K-12 generated through The Mathematics Science Partnership Program (MSP); 15 Robert F. Kennedy lesson plans, in cooperation with NYSUT; and the complete set of Alternative Grade Level Indicators for Students with Severe Disabilities in Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts and recently Social Studies. As always, thousands of lesson plans and instructional tasks are available by exploring the learning standards and performance indicators in the seven standards areas. We have also provided the Learning Standards in three Standard Servicing options, XML, HTML with the latest in PDF format.

US Federal Government Web Portal
The US Federal Government once again provides valuable resources for the entire school community. Teaching for a New World
This new policy brief from the Alliance for Excellent Education “offers a new vision for secondary teacher preparation that ensures teacher candidates possess the critical skills necessary to help all high school students graduate ready for college, career, and life.” According to Alliance President Bob Wise, “The job of teaching has changed, but in many cases, the preparation of teacher candidates has not.” http://www.all4ed.org/files/TeachingForANewWorld.pdf

State Archives Launches RSS Feed
The New York State Archives has launched a news feed using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology. Subscribers will be among the first to find out about Archives events, new records brought into the Archives, press releases, resources for state agencies and local governments, and any major changes to the website – such as new guides to records, new educational sites for teachers and students, and award and grant opportunities. The New York State STEM Collaborative Launches Its Web Site
The New York State STEM Collaborative is a professional association endeavoring to promote a unified approach for STEM education in New York. The STEM Collaborative membership consists of a number of professional education associations consisting of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), the New York State Technology Education Association (NYSTEA), the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE), the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE), and the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). Their Web site has been launched, and can be located at http://www.nysstemeducation.org/.

United States Global Competence Website
The American Council on Education and Coalition for International Education are pleased to announce the launch of www.usglobalcompetence.org  . Titled "Engaging the World: U.S. Global Competence for the 21st century," the site demonstrates through videos and highlights of a recent symposium the importance of strengthening U.S. global competence in the 21st century. The site also includes a section on the Global Symposium – “Critical Challenges in an Unpredictable World: Implications for U.S. Engagement”. This event took place on Capitol Hill in March 2009, and the website features downloadable presentations as well as other documentation of the event. Finally, you will find useful links to information on the Title VI/ Fulbright-Hays programs and related U.S. Department of Education online resources. College.gov--A New U.S. Department of Education Resource
College.gov is a new website from the U.S. Department of Education which "aims to motivate students with inspirational stories and information about planning, preparing and paying for college. Designed with students' input and participation, College.gov was created by the U.S. Department of Education to be a go-to online resource for credible information about college that also provides real life experiences of peers who are already attending college. www.college.gov .

USDOE - Doing What Works: How to Organize Your Teaching
This multimedia practice guide from the U.S. Department of Education's Doing What Works website includes seven research-based recommendations on organizing teaching and learning experiences. These resources include essential concepts, recommended practices, and planning templates. School districts can use the videos and supporting materials offered to discuss how teachers organize their teaching and learning. The four research-based recommendations for effective teaching and learning include: "Space learning over time with review and quizzing; Alternate worked examples with problem-solving practice; Connect abstract and concrete representations of concepts; and Use higher-order questions to help students build explanations"  See  http://dww.ed.gov/topic/topic_landing.cfm?PA_ID=9&T_ID=19 

Regional Education Labs (REL)--Northeast and Islands Reference Desk
In an effort to provide stakeholders with timely responses to research-based education questions, REL Northeast and Islands has launched a new service-the Reference Desk-which offers references, referrals, and citations in brief reports generated quickly, sometimes within a few days. Responses contain links to relevant websites, research reports, and journal articles, as well as targeted referrals to organizations or government-funded centers that might provide more information or offer technical assistance. http://www.relnei.org/referencedesk.2009-08-21.php

New York State Archives Launches Innovative New Tool for Educators
Students, researchers, and lovers of New York State history will have a better sense of the types of records held by the New York State Archives with the launch of Document Showcase, a quarterly feature on the New York State Archives’ website, highlighting iconic records by investigating specific historical topics. Quarterly Document Showcase submissions feature a display of 3-5 hand-picked historical records on a selected topic, background information on those records, a link to educational activities for classroom use, and other related information. October’s edition examines industrialization and child labor in New York State. AASL Announce Top 25 Web sites for Teaching and Learning
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) announces a new resource for school library media specialists and their teacher colleagues. The Best Websites for Teaching and Learning, a list honoring the top twenty-five Internet sites for enhancing learning and curriculum development, is considered the "best of the best" by AASL. The Top 25 Web sites for Teaching and Learning were named so because they foster the qualities of innovation, creativity, active participation and collaboration. All sites are free, web-based sites that are user-friendly and encourage a community of learners to explore and discover. They also provide a foundation to support AASL's Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. Interactive Game Lets High Schoolers Explore Berlin Race 4 The Future.
This interactive web-based game allows high school students to explore Berlin while receiving clues from kiosks spread throughout the city. It features visits to the Brandenburg Gate, Sony Center, Holocaust Memorial, Reichstag, Ka De We and several more. This game takes between 60-90 minutes to complete and can end early if time runs out. A broadband collection is highly recommended.
