Learning Standards and Core Curriculum

New York State Next Generation Learning Standards for Mathematics (2017)

Note: In September 2017, the Board of Regents approved the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards for Mathematics (2017). Full implementation of the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards for Mathematics will occur for grades PK-8, with NYS 3-8 assessments aligned to the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards for Mathematics, school year 2020-2021.  Information regarding full implementation and NYS assessment alignment at the high school level will be forthcoming.  However, assessment alignment at the high school level will not occur prior to the school year 2020-2021. A transition timeline, along with an Implementation Roadmap is available.  The Implementation Roadmap is designed to provide districts with a recommended plan that contains shared goals and implementation activities spread out over three phases (Raising Awareness, Building Capacity and Implementation) that could be utilized during the transition process.


P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics (2011)

Note: All school districts are expected to have their local curriculum aligned to the P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics by school year 2012-13. During the 2012-13 school year, student achievement expectations for Mathematics will be based on the P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics.


New Standard 3

As Approved by the Board of Regents on March 15, 2005

New Standard 3

Students will:

  • understand the concepts of and become proficient with the skills of mathematics;
  • communicate and reason mathematically;
  • become problem solvers by using appropriate tools and strategies;

through the integrated study of number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and statistics and probability.

  • The PreK-8 portion of this core is effective September 2005.
  • The Commencement-level portion of this core becomes effective in September of 2007. Implementation may begin sooner based on local choice.
