NOW IS A GOOD TIME

During these difficult economic times, many schools across the State may be faced with a possible decrease in State funds.  With that decrease might come a need for your district to reduce costs.  As we know all too well, business and marketing education is an elective area that is vulnerable in times like these.  That is why I am encouraging ALL business departments throughout the State to form “Business Advisory Councils” made up of leading business folks from the community.  These advisory councils can serve as great ambassadors for your program, serve as hosts for internships and other work experiences, serve as advisors to students and teachers and perhaps most importantly serve as a spokesperson for your department to administrators and board of education members.  The influence that they can bring in difficult times might be the difference between the department being reduced in size, eliminated, or flourishing.  Now is a great time to get going on that advisory council.

BUSINESS & MARKETING EDUCATION LISTSERV

As some of you already are aware, in an effort to increase communication among business teachers across the State, I have introduced a listserv which can be used by any business teacher to inquire about any business and marketing topic.  This will give all business teachers access to anyone who is on the listserv.  Directions on how to subscribe to the listserv are on my website.   Basically, here are the steps that you would need to take to join the group:

SPORTS CAREER CONSULTING

Subject: FREE sports/entertainment business and marketing text for NY
teachers!

Some of you may already be taking advantage of the curriculum programs
provided by Sports Career Consulting (SCC).  For those of you who are not,
SCC has announced that a FREE non-traditional sports and entertainment
business textbook is available online to any business teacher in the state.
You can download the text AND a student workbook for FREE at
www.sportscareerconsulting.com.  Just click on the image of the free book,
fill out the form, and you'll be redirected to the download page.

For those interested in supplementing the text with PowerPoints, activities,
projects, podcasts, weekly current events news, case studies and much more,
SCC has a membership program available called the Education Resource Center.
SCC also offers a program to help you create a structure in your classroom
to build your own sports/entertainment company so you can begin marketing
your school sports and entertainment or an event you and your class come up
with on your own (Dodgeball tournament, charity golf tournament etc).  That
program is called the Sports Business Program and offers an excellent (and
unique) way to fundraise at your school without losing that connection to
education and career development.  To learn more, go to
www.sportscareerconsulting.com/learnmore.

If you have any questions, please contact Chris Lindauer at

AP ACCOUNTING INITIATIVE

Currently, there is an ongoing initiative to create a course and exam in Accounting
that would hopefully be adopted by the College Board.  As you may already know, the College Board
owns all AP courses and the “AP” designation.  This initiative is being led by two college
accounting instructors who are also CPA’s.    The two instructors have been told that the
College Board will hear proposals for new courses and will accept proposals in 2012.

Prior to 2012, the proposed course will be piloted throughout the country.  Currently being run
on a small scale, the pilot is in its second year and is being implemented by 20 teachers
in ten States.

BTA and SED are discussing the steps to work with the group as part of the pilot.

I will share more information as it becomes available.
