Purpose of Funding |
The purpose of this competitive grant is to provide funds for a leadership development program for 30-35 schools that are in need of improvement with large populations of English Language Learner/limited English Proficient students, hereinafter referred to as "emergent bilinguals." Funds will used to fund (1) release time for participants in the program and (2) materials purchases to support implementation of an Instructional Improvement Plan. | |||||||||||||||||||
Eligible Applicants |
Certain public school districts in Long Island, Westchester and New York City (detailed in chart below), with schools in need of improvement (SINI) identified because they are not making 2010-2011 Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) with their emergent bilinguals; with above average numbers of emergent bilinguals represented in SINI schools, for their region; and with above average numbers of emergent bilinguals represented in the SINI schools identified for not making progress with their emergent bilinguals (English Language Learners—ELLs). Eligible school districts must submit a separate proposal narrative and FS-10 budget for each school included in their application. Eligible schools are listed in Attachment A. There are approximately 170 schools eligible for award. This is a pilot program. Depending on its success, the grant program may be expanded to other parts of New York State.

Funding |
$1,015,000. The maximum award per participating school is up to $29,000. Approximately 30-35 awards are anticipated to be made. |
