a/ Estimated

For the current school year, it is estimated that 268,000 professional staff members are employed in the public schools.  Of that number, 84.3 percent are classroom teachers while the remainder perform related and supervisory functions.

It should be noted that the above figures do not include professional staff employed by Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).  In 1989-90, BOCES employed 8,537 professionals, of whom 6,409 were classroom teachers.  In 2007-08, these figures were 9,545 and 6,609 respectively.
