SAMPLE PROPOSITIONS

BUDGET PROPOSITION

RESOLVED that the proposed budget of expenditures of the District for the school year in the amount of $_________________, and for the purposes shown in the statement of estimated expenditures adopted by the Board of Education, be and the same hereby is approved and the amount thereof shall be raised by a levy of a tax upon the taxable property of the school district, after first deducting the monies available from State Aid and other sources as provided by law.

AT LARGE ELECTION PROPOSITION

(with Unexpired Term to be Filled)

To elect (_) members of the Board of Education for ____-year terms commencing 20__, and expiring on _________, 20__. One of the successful candidates will be eligible to fill the unexpired portion of a term immediately upon qualifying after election and until ________ 20__.

ELECTION PROPOSITION TO CHANGE FROM SEPARATE SPECIFIC SEATS TO AT-LARGE VOTING

BE IT RESOLVED, commencing 20__, that vacancies on the _____________________ School District Board not be considered separate and specific seats, rather elections shall be at large, and that nominating petitions are not to describe any specific vacancy for which a candidate is nominated.

EXTENSION OF TRANSPORTATION PROPOSITION

Shall the Board of Education be authorized to extend the School District's current policy for transporting non-public school students in grades nine (9) through twelve (12) from the current fifteen (15) miles to thirty-five (35) miles, effective at the beginning of the 20__-__ school year, in the approximate amount of $______________ and levy the necessary tax therefore.

MODIFICATION OF STUDENT TRANSPORTATION (REDUCTION)

Shall the ________________________ School District modify its public school transportation eligibility effective __________, 20__ for Grades K-6 pupils from the existing one-half (½) mile limit to a new one (1) mile limit for Grades 7-9 pupils from the existing one (1) mile limit to a new one and one-half (1-½) mile limit and for Grades 10-12 pupils from the existing one and one-half (1-½) mile limit to a new two (2) mile limit, thereby reducing the proposed 20__- __ school district budget in the approximate amount of $_____________ and levy the necessary tax therefore.

CONSTRUCTION PROPOSITION

Resolved that the Board of Education be and is authorized to erect an addition to the School at a cost not to exceed the sum of $______________ and to issue therefore obligations of the district pursuant to the provisions of Education Law and the Local Finance Law, and to levy a tax to be collected in installments for the payment of the principal and the interest on such obligations.(NOTE: Proposition may not be submitted for a vote more than twice during any twelve month period and in no event more than once in ninety days, except when bids received exceed approved amount and an additional proposition is necessary)

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROPOSITION

Shall the Board of Education of ___________________ School District, __________ County, New York, be authorized to reconstruct the district's schools for the purpose of providing additional classroom facilities, and for general rehabilitation, and that the sum of $__________ or so much therefor as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax upon the taxable property of said School District and collected in annual installments as provided by Section 416 of the Education law, and, in anticipation of such tax, obligations of said School District shall be issued.

WALK-IN VOTER REGISTRATION PROPOSITION

To authorize the Board of Education to implement a system of walk-in voter registration under which (1) registration will be conducted from _________ to __________ and ________ to ________ on days when school is in session beginning with the first day of the student attendance and ending with the last day of student attendance and during the period between the last day of student attendance and the first day of student attendance from __:00 AM to __:00 PM on regular days of business; and (2) such system of walk-in voter registration shall be effective beginning with the next annual meeting and election and shall take place at the Office of the District Clerk in the ___________________ Building and at the Office of presently located in the __________________ School.
