2005 Legislation

Fiscal Accountability Legislation Enacted

Chapter 263 of the Laws of 2005 require all school board members elected or appointed on or after July 1, 2005 to participate in six hours of training in the financial oversight, accountability, and fiduciary responsibilities of a board member, to be completed within the first year of service. The law requires the New York State Education Department to approve the curriculum offered to meet this requirement, in consultation with the New York State Office of the State Comptroller, and any training providers.

Guidelines for Applying for Approval of Curriculum or Providers

Commissioner's regulations 170.12(a) cites the subject areas NYSED considers to be essential for school board member training provided pursuant to Chapter 263 of the Laws of 2005.

Applicants should submit a detailed outline (3-10 pages) detailing the depth and breadth of content in the topics noted in the regulations.

In addition the curriculum should clearly state the objectives of the training and applicants should submit resumes for any training providers to the following address:
