Professional Development for Advanced Coursework in STEM

The New York State Education Department in partnership with the College Board is pleased to announce a three-year program focused on Professional Development for Advanced Coursework in STEM. We invite you to join this initiative as we lead the nation with the first state-wide STEM Advanced Professional Development Program in the United States.

The program commences this summer with 5-day Summer Institutes in Math and Science which will focus on aligned curriculum through vertical teaming. Additional training opportunities will be ongoing with blended face-to-face and online professional development through August 2014.

Both new and experienced math and science educators from eligible schools will learn effective strategies for building a pipeline of rigorous, aligned instruction

All the workshops are FREE, and participation will enhance your teachers’ knowledge, skills, and ability to prepare your students for college and careers.

The application due date is June 15, 2012.

Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness RFP

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has released a request for proposals for grants totaling $72 million for the period of fall 2012 through July 2014 under the title: Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness. This competitive grant request, available to NYS school districts, is supported by funds from several of the projects envisioned in the federal "Race to the Top" grant: Great Teachers and Leaders. NYSED will evaluate proposals on their alignment with the requirements established in the Request for Proposal (RFP).

NYSED Announces Professional Development for STEM Teachers

Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. announced a three-year $4.8 million initiative with the College Board to provide professional development training in advanced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) coursework for teachers across New York State. New York’s successful Race to the Top (RTTT) application envisioned this training, which will begin this summer and continue through 2014. The STEM training is being funded through RTTT to develop and deliver direct and on-line professional development to 1500 teachers in high-needs districts throughout the State.

NYSED Awards Contracts for Development of ELA and Math Curricula

State Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. announced that four contracts have been awarded to develop pre-kindergarten through fifth grade curricular materials with associated professional development aligned to the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards. The contracts, valued at $12.9 million, will be funded from New York State’s federal Race to the Top (RTTT) funds.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has released important resources for district leaders as they implement a critical component of the new teacher evaluation system, including the Student Learning Objective (SLO) Guidance Document, Student Learning Objective (SLO) Road Map, and a series of introductory webinars. These resources explain how New York State will assess the learning growth of students in classrooms where there is no State assessment that can be used for a State-provided growth or value-added measure (sometimes called non-tested subjects).

State Education Leaders Praise Agreement on Evaluation Law

Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch and State Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. said that the agreement on teacher and principal evaluation legislation is a great step forward toward improving teaching and learning in New York’s schools. King said the new system will protect more than $2.5 billion in federal Race to the Top funds and other education funds over two years and, more importantly, help improve student performance.
