In the New York State Education Department 2012 Request for Proposal (Round 1), thirteen Full Applications to open new charter schools were accepted for review and peer evaluation. After full review by panels of expert reviewers, those applications that are found to fully meet the criteria set forth in NYSED 2012 Charter School Application Kit will advance forward for capacity interviews with the applicants and proposed founding trustees. At the conclusion of this comprehensive evaluation process, recommendations will be made by Department senior staff to the Board of Regents for action at the June 18-19 meeting, and schools that are issued a charter will begin to serve students in the 2013-2014 school year.

Nine Round 1 applications are for schools to be located in New York City: four in the Bronx, three in Brooklyn and two in Manhattan. In addition, there is one application for schools located in each of the following school districts: East Ramapo Central School District, Riverhead Central School District, Utica City School District, and Yonkers Public Schools.

Six of the proposed schools are middle/high schools, three are middle schools and four would serve students in grades K-5.

Additional applications will be accepted in Request for Proposal Round 2, which begins with a Letter of Intent submission deadline of June 25. All schools that are chartered in either round will be authorized to open in the 2013-2014 school year.
