Bronx Charter School for Excellence and P.S. 85

Currently, the Great Expectations Elementary School (P.S. 85) and the Bronx Charter School for Excellence have been working together to strengthen the kindergarten reading programs at both schools. Their main goals are to have all students show progress in reading throughout the year, have the overwhelming majority of students reading at or above grade level by the end of the year, and to increase teacher capacity through collaboration, frequent feedback, and professional development.

At this point in the year, seventy percent of students are reading above grade level across both schools.  Over ninety percent of students are reading on grade level and over ninety-eight percent of students show growth. For P.S. 85, the growth is double the previous year-end’s results (2012-2013).  Through surveys, interviews and discussions the staff and administration at P.S. 85 consistently remark on the drastic improvement in their students’ performance. The first grade teachers have also begun inquiring about the work that is happening and show interest in rethinking their work for next year.

Teachers of both schools meet on a weekly basis to plan and discuss topics relevant to their work, with some teachers spending extended periods of time co-teaching at their partner school.   Evidence of best practices shared during the collaborative sessions is found in all classrooms.
