2018 Application for Charter Renewal
Posted April 2017, Revised June 9, 2017

The Board of Regents is obligated by law to conduct ongoing performance reviews of each charter school and to decide whether to renew the school’s charter and for how long. In 2012, the Board adopted a Charter School Renewal Policy PDF image, which guides the work of the Charter School Office in overseeing the performance of Regents-authorized charter schools.

The guidelines below reflect the Charter School Performance Framework PDF document, which is used by the Office to evaluate school performance and by the Board of Regents to make renewal determinations.

The Charter School Performance Framework addresses three broad areas:

  1. The school’s academic success and ability to operate in an educationally sound manner;
  2. The school’s organizational viability and its ability to operate in a fiscally sound manner; and
  3. The school’s faithfulness to the terms of its charter and adherence to applicable laws and regulations.

By providing full and accurate information under each of these three areas, a school has the opportunity to make its best case for charter renewal. A school’s renewal decision is supplemented by additional evidence collected throughout the entire charter term, such as annual reports, independent financial audits, state testing data, and all site visit reports, as well as additional information gathered during the charter renewal process.
