A Message from Superintendent David Hubman
I am very excited to be here at the New York State School for the Deaf. I consider this opportunity a privilege and an honor to be working with such a dedicated staff and such wonderful children. The NYSSD has a long history of providing a top notch quality education for its students, along with a variety of extra-curricular activities. Although I have only been here a short period, I realize how unique and special these children are and how committed the staff is to the safety and education of our students.
As a way of introducing myself to you and the community, I thought I would share some of my background. This year marks my 30th in educating our youth. I spent 5 years as an elementary teacher. I taught 6th grade and truly enjoyed the experience. From the classroom I became a Guidance Counselor at my alma-mater, Romulus Central, where I spent 12 years assisting children and families prepare for life after high school. The decision on post-secondary opportunities is a difficult one, and takes planning. I then took a position as the School-to-Work Coordinator and Athletic Director. This position offered me an opportunity to work with students, schools, and businesses in providing real-life work experiences for students. We focused on employability skills for all students. From Romulus we moved to Oxford, NY where I took on the position of Middle School Principal. While in Oxford we increased the amount of time children were exposed to literacy. Our fifth and sixth grade students were provided a full period of reading instruction. From Oxford I accepted a K-12 Principal position in DeRuyter, NY. Again, we placed a major emphasis on literacy and providing our students with as much literacy support as we could provide. From DeRuyter I was offered the Superintendent’s position at Adirondack Central School. During my time there we successfully completed the new APPR agreement, implemented the new NYS teacher evaluation system, and implemented a new Reading and Math program for our elementary students that are focused on the new Common Core State Standards.
I have been very happily married for almost 26 years to my wife Pat. We have raised three young men, Justin, Andrew, and Patrick. Two of our boys are near the end of their college careers and one is working as an engineer in Utica. We are avid outdoorsmen and enjoy hunting, fishing, playing golf, camping, and hiking.
My first goal for the year is to immerse myself into all aspects of the operation of the school. I have been learning sign, getting to know the academic program, observing the students in class, on the soccer filed, and in the dorm. The children have accepted me and are excellent teachers. The staff has been welcoming and are excited about opportunities to become part of the decision making process. We have formed several committees, and are always looking to add parents, alumni, or anyone else interested in becoming a part of the school community.
Another goal we have set as a school is a focus on making more educators and parents aware of what NYSSD can offer the students in their care. We have developed a marketing/promotion committee that has as a goal to develop a strategy for outreach which will display the qualities of our program and the opportunities available to students who attend our school. There is no doubt in my mind that we have the ability and the capacity to expand our program. If you are interested in becoming part of this committee, please contact me. Our first meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 20 from 2:40-3:30.
Another committee you might be interested in becoming a part of is the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee. This committee will meet on the first Monday of each month from 6:00-7:30 PM. This committee will work together on issues like communication, community-school connections, and bringing awareness to the community about all the school has to offer. Our first meeting will be held on October 7th. We will meet in the conference center. If you are interested in either of these committees, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to meeting to meeting you, and continuing to learn about the school and the community. This is a very special place, and together I am positive we can make the experience for the current students’ life altering and memorable.
