NYSSD Staff works closely with parents to provide an integrated learning environment. We work together with parents to reach their child’s communication and educational goals.

Auditory/Oral Program: (Promoting Speaking and Listening)

Our Speech Therapists provide a specialized program to assist your child in expanding auditory-oral functioning through their Cochlear implant and/or hearing aids. On-going speech and language therapy and evaluations are provided.

  • Language-rich program with academic and vocabulary goal developed by a certified Teacher of the Deaf
  • Integration with hearing peers
  • Daily speech therapy with emphasis on auditory skill development
  • Transitional support
  • Parent group meetings
  • After school activities developed by residential staff that encourages total family involvement
  • Field trips throughout the year
  • Lending library
  • 6 week Summer Enhancement Program

Total Communication Program

  • The Total Communication classroom incorporates spoken English, ASL, and simultaneous communication based on the child’s needs-taught by a Teacher of the Deaf.
  • ASL instruction
  • Deaf peers & Deaf adults as role models
  • After school activities developed by residential staff that encourage total family involvement
  • Field trips throughout the year
  • Lending Library
  • 6 week summer Enhancement Program

Our NYSSD Audiologist provides:

  • Regular Audiological Evaluations
  • Monitors Cochlear implants and hearing aides.
  • Collaboration with your child’s audiologist to ensure Cochlear Implant mapping and hearing aid programming is up to date.
