1998 Graduation Cohort Outcomes

The Overview of School Performance in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Analysis of Student Subgroup Performance includes data on the high school graduation rate.  In calculating the 1998 graduation rate, students were counted as graduates only if they earned a local diploma with or without a Regents endorsement by June 2002. Some of the remaining students in the graduation cohort may have subsequently earned diplomas. Those students who did not graduate may still be enrolled after four years in high school, have transferred to a General Educational Development (GED) program, have earned an Individual Education Plan (IEP) diploma or a local certificate of attendance, or have left school.

The Graduation Cohort Outcomes reports supplement the graduation rate data to show information about the graduation status of students.  Each report contains an alphabetical list of diploma-granting schools in the specified region with the numbers of students in the 1998 graduation cohort who have each outcome after four years of high school.

The following table describes the contents of the reports listed above.

Column Label Description
Accountability Cohort Count of students in the 1998 assessment accountability cohort.  This is the same group as is reported for school accountability purposes.
Excluded by XFer to GED  Count of students excluded from the 1998 assessment accountability cohort by reason of transfer to a GED program.  These students are combined with the Accountability Cohort to form the GradRate Cohort.
GradRate Cohort The sum of Accountability Cohort and Excluded by XFer to GED.
Local Diplomas (includes Regents) Count of students in the 1998 assessment graduation cohort who earned a local diploma (with or without further endorsements) by June 2002.  This is an outcome category.
IEPs and Certificate Count of students in the 1998 assessment graduation cohort who earned an IEP diploma or a local attendance certificate by June 2002.  This is an outcome category.
Still Enrolled Count of students in the 1998 assessment graduation cohort who are still enrolled after their fourth year in the cohort.  This is an outcome category.
Last to GED Count of students in the 1998 assessment graduation cohort who last left school to participate in a program leading to a GED credential.  Usually this will be the same as the count Excluded by XFer to GED.  In certain circumstances a student may return from a GED program to a diploma program, and so be excluded from the Accountability Cohort, included in the GradRate Cohort, and in a different outcome count (for example, earned a local diploma, and so be counted in the Local Diplomas (includes Regents) column). This is an outcome category.
Left School Count of students in the 1998 assessment graduation cohort who left school for other reasons.  These reasons are identified for the 2002 data collection as:
- Left School: First Time Dropout
- Left School: Previously counted as a Dropout
- Long-Term Absence (20 consecutive unexcused days)
- Left School, No Documentation of Transfer
- Reached Maximum Legal Age
- Left the U.S.
- Deceased
  This is an outcome category.
