The workshop will focus on how Occupational Therapists assess school aged children with visual impairments based on clinical observations and how that information is used to develop treatment plans. Workshop will include hands-on, interactive materials and activities that teachers may incorporate into their classrooms to address areas such as fine motor, perceptual, organizational and daily living skills. Sue Shannon and Sarah Monahan, Occupational Therapists from the Perkins School for the Blind Secondary Program will conduct this interactive workshop.

Learner Outcomes – At the completion of this workshop, participants will:
- Become familiar elements of an OT evaluations including clinical terms and assessment tools
- Learn the process which guides OT’s to develop treatment plans and IEP objectives
- Explore a variety of activities, environmental adaptations and assistive devices that OT’s may recommend to support development of functional abilities including fine motor, perceptual and organizational skills.
- Develop a repertoire of select daily living skills teaching techniques for school activities related to the expanded core curriculum
- Compile a list of indicators which may suggest referral for OT assessment/services

It is for service providers who work with people with vision loss.
It will cover the importance of contrast sensitivity function for
the person with low vision, how to measure it, and how to increase
contrast in the home and other environments. The webinar will also
cover illumination, different types of lamps available, and pros and
cons for using each depending on type of vision and activity in
which person is engaged, positioning of light, and controlling for glare.

VI & Autism Spectrum Disorder Summer Institute

This three day institute on Autism Spectrum Disorder
and Visual Impairment, will be conducted by D. Jay Gense, Ed.S.
and Marilyn H. Gense, MA., from Oregon. Jay and Marilyn are leading
authorities on ASDVI and are the authors of Autism Spectrum Disorders
and Visual Impairment: Meeting Students’ Learning Needs. This
workshop will address assessment and program planning for students
with Autism Spectrum Disorders & Visual Impairment.

This year’s Perkins Summer Institute is offered in collaboration with UMass Boston and will be conducted with on-line and on-site face to face sessions for graduate course credit. The on-site face to face sessions will be offered for Professional Development Points. This Institute is designed for Teachers of the Visually Impaired and other vision educators working with students with visual and multiple impairments. Participants will examine and explore the unique educational needs of children with visual and multiple disabilities as well as the skills related to teaching these children in a full array of educational settings; Pre-K through grade 12. Topics will include teaching strategies in the core and expanded core curriculum areas as well as in depth sessions on Cortical Visual Impairment.
Course has been approved for three (3) graduate credits (36 hours) through the Graduate College of Education at UMass Boston. Pending ACVREP credits.
Space is limited; eligible participants will be accepted in order of receipt of written application and $100.00 deposit. We are unable to take phone registrations. Notification of acceptance will be sent with further information.
Registration and deposit for UMASS Boston Course is due on May 26, 2010.
Instructions for enrolling for participation for the on-line
components will be sent upon receipt of the registration. **Enrollment
must be completed at UMASS by June 1, 2010.
Registration and deposit for Course at PDP level
is due on June 25, 2010.
